Book Keeping for Sole Traders

Hi, I'm Sue

If you are a Sole Trader earning less than £20K a year before deducting expenses, you fall below the qualifying income threshold for filing your annual returns digitally.

Any more than this earned in the 2026 to 2027 tax year, will require an approved digital system to submit quarterly reviews and end of year returns - instead of being able to use your existing HMRC online account at the end of each tax year.

I can help you keep it simple with a cash accounting system that records your monthly income and expenses and provides everything you need to submit your annual returns, recoup overpaid tax and make a claim for support from Universal Credits, if needed.

I either manage your accounts or teach you how to do it for yourself (or both). You will always have my support and I will continue to post helpful information on my blog.

There are 4 million of us, many content to earn a modest or part-time income and keep ourselves under the radar. If this is you, you do not have to go digital and if you want to grow, there are other ways which I will share with you over the coming months.

For today, thank you for being here and stay tuned!

Working from home

I have always worked from home and this is an expense every Sole Trader should claim for as a business expense. If this hasn't been done in previous years, it could mean you are due a sizable tax refund.

Over the last 40 years I have used my own simple system to keep the required records and submit my end of year returns early, freeing up time to concentrate on my clients, writing, volunteer and creative work.

During last 10 years, I have been helping friends to navigate the system and save them paying agency or accountancy fees. If you earn less than £20K a year, you don't need to go to the cost and hassle of going digital.

I am a Member of the Institute of Administration and Management (AInstAM), and a qualified award-winning Business Advisor who has helped hundreds of small business owners learn new skills to trade independently, online and in their local communites.

I hope you find the information here helpful and please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.
